Youth Speaker Competition 2010

YOUTH SPEAKER OF THE YEAR FINALISTS hold up "Secrets of Great Public Speakers Exposed" by Dale Beaumont, who kindly donated copies for all the finalists!

After a tough competition at the Burwood RSL, Suna Ozcan from Macarthur Girls High walked away with the SpeakersBank Australia trophy, as well as $300 worth of computer equipment, courtesy of Dick Smith and $100 cash donated by LJ Hooker, Thornleigh.

Suna's take on - "Speak Up! Speak Out!" - pick an issue that you feel strongly about - was "Ken and Barbie." Suna delivered a powerful speech opening with her observations of her younger cousin playing with Ken and Barbie, but insisting the doctor's outfit could only be worn by Ken. This was followed by sound information on the glass ceiling and pay issues and career options women face today.

Leah Nye from Tara Anglican girls stole second place by pleading that teachers should give meaningful and relevant homework tasks to relieve the "Burden of Homework." Her prize was $200 worth of computer goodies from Dick Smith.

Elsa Young took third place with a compassionate view on "Asylum Seekers."

The finalists have all taken part in a training workshop, survived the heats, been selected at the semi-final competition and made it through to the final contest.

Our thanks go to BURWOOD RSL for their continued support in this program, Dick Smith who provided $500 worth of computer equipment to be given as prizes and LJ Hooker Thornleigh who gave the winner $100 cash.
